Excellent piece of identity design by Danish studio Make. The word mark by itself is excellent, the implementation simply reinforces it.

During one of my let’s look at fonts on the internet sessions (for a project I have in mind), I remembered a little beauty released earlier in the year called Brandon Grotesque. A quick Google led me to the creators website, an interestingly laid out site that I felt needed to be brought to people’s attention. I’m not sure I like the scroll anywhere feel to it, but it’s certainly a different take on showing off your catalogue.

I really like it when designers show us glimpses of their process. This is a really interesting one from Jon Hicks as he evolves an illustration to create the new Woo Themes mascot.

Work

This weekend I’ve done a little work on this site. It’s sporting a temporary new theme while I work on creating a more suited design for this place. I’ve also included a couple of pages, my about page is now alive as well as an easier way of contacting me.

The other major addition is my portfolio section, which is now live at work.philbowell.com.

For a while now I’ve been trying to work out the best way of displaying my work. I’ve wanted something easy to upload and maintain, tried several different methods out but it wasn’t until Dan at Simplebits decided to use a second Tumblr site that it really hit me this was what I’ve been looking for. Since Tumblr has made blogging so much easier and more enjoyable I figured it was the best way to make keeping my portfolio updated.

I love this concept, in fact I’m surprised I’ve never seen something like it before.

Typekit

Last year my taste for type grew quite considerably, I developed a new appreciation of serif type and the elegance that it can bring to a design.

During the middle of last year a typeface was released that quickly rose to the top of my favourites list. It’s one of the few typefaces I’ve actually set aside money to buy, normally I spend ages wishing I could afford them, and thankfully it hasn’t sunk down my list from over use. It’s an excellent text face that I find a pleasure to read both in print and on-screen.

Well, thanks to the wonders of modern browsers I’ve been able to use that font here at PBcom. It’s been in place for those of you who have it installed, but from today should work in the latest versions of Safari and Firefox, along with Internet Explorer back to version 6. Thanks to the wonders of Typekit, all the copy is now set in Jos Buivenga’s excellent Calluna.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

A brilliantly executed redesign from Crush + Lovely. One of those moments that makes me think “I wish I’d thought of that!”

Excellent insight into Khoi’s and Felton’s Layer Tennis match from last Friday.

A new global visual language for the BBC’s digital services. An interesting insight into the coming redesign for the BBC website, it’s very comprehensive and looks set to improve the BBC website further. I found the talk about the construction of the pages using the grid to be particularly interesting. Looking forward to seeing the finished article.
